Gas burners that click but won't light, electric coils that stay cold, or a glass or induction cooktop showing an error? Our local technicians repair gas, electric and induction stoves across Leander.
These are the stove and cooktop problems we get called about most. Open a question to see the usual causes and what you can safely check before you call.
Spills and grease block the small holes around the burner head. Gas then burns unevenly, with yellow or lazy flames on one side.
If the burner cap sits off-center after cleaning, the flame comes out uneven and may lift, flicker or go out.
Gas needs the right mix of air to burn blue. A shutter that is set wrong gives a tall yellow flame that leaves soot on pans.
Quick check: Let the burner cool, lift off the cap and clean the ports with a dry brush, then set the cap back flat and centered. A yellow flame can produce more carbon monoxide, so keep a working CO detector nearby. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
Induction only works with magnetic cookware. If a magnet does not stick to the bottom of the pan, the zone will not recognize it.
Each zone has its own coil and sensor. When the sensor fails, the zone flashes or stays off even with the right pan on it.
The power board drives the coils. If it fails, one or more zones stop working, often with an error code on the display.
Quick check: Hold a fridge magnet to the bottom of the pan, use a pan that covers most of the zone and center it. Also check that the control lock is off.
The knob turns a switch that cycles power on and off for the lower settings. When its contacts wear out, only full power gets through.
Coil burners plug into a receptacle under the cooktop. Burnt contacts make a poor connection, so the burner works only at some settings or flickers.
Heat can damage the wire between the switch and the burner and cause the same on-high-only problem.
Quick check: On a coil stove, with everything off and cool, swap the burner with another one of the same size. If the problem follows the burner, the burner is at fault. If not, it is the switch or the receptacle.
A burner or oven element that cracks inside can short out and trip the breaker as soon as it heats up.
Power connects to the stove at a terminal block on the back. Loose or burnt connections there overheat and trip the breaker.
After a boil-over or a wet cleaning, water can get into a coil element and cause a short until it fully dries.
Quick check: Note which burner or setting trips the breaker. Do not keep resetting it. If it trips again, leave the stove off until it is checked.
