Warm fresh-food section, water under the fridge, frost on the back wall or an ice maker that went quiet. Our local technicians repair side-by-side, French door, top-freezer and bottom-freezer refrigerators across Leander.
These are the fridge problems we get called about most. Open a question to see what usually causes it and what you can safely check before you call.
The valve behind the fridge opens to send water to the ice maker. When its coil burns out or the small screen inside clogs with minerals from hard Central Texas water, no water reaches the ice tray.
The short tube that feeds the tray can freeze shut if the freezer runs too cold or the valve lets a slow drip through. The ice plug stops every new fill.
The module runs the fill and harvest cycle. If its motor or control fails, cubes stay stuck in the mold and the bin stays empty.
Quick check: Make sure the ice maker switch or arm is in the on position and the water line behind the fridge is not kinked. If you just changed the water filter, check that it clicked fully into place.
A torn or flattened gasket lets warm, humid air in every minute the door is closed. That moisture freezes on the walls and food packages.
A few times a day the heater melts frost off the evaporator coils behind the back panel. When it burns out, ice keeps growing until air can't flow and the fridge section warms up.
This part tells the heater when to switch on. If it stays open, the heater never runs even though the heater itself is fine.
Quick check: Close the freezer door on a dollar bill. If the bill slides out with no resistance, the gasket is not sealing at that spot. Also check that no package keeps the door from closing all the way.
The coils under or behind the fridge release heat. A layer of dust or pet hair traps it, so the compressor has to run much longer to keep things cold.
The relay helps the compressor start. When it wears out, the compressor struggles, clicks on and off, and the fridge never quite reaches its set temperature.
If refrigerant leaks out, the system can't remove enough heat and runs nonstop. This repair needs a technician certified to handle refrigerant.
Quick check: Leave a few inches of space around the fridge for airflow and check the settings. A fresh-food section at 37°F and a freezer at 0°F is a good target.
The line that feeds the dispenser runs through the freezer door. If the freezer is set too cold or the door was left open, the water in it can freeze.
Pressing the paddle closes a small switch that opens the water valve. A broken switch means the valve never gets the signal.
An old filter slows the flow to a trickle or stops it. Most manufacturers recommend a new filter about every six months.
Quick check: Check that the control lock on the dispenser panel is off, and replace the filter if it is older than six months.
